We All Have Our Hands Full

"We all have our hands full of something; my hands are just full of blessings."

One of my friends said this on Facebook, and I love it! We were discussing how some people immediately look down on you or judge you for having lots of kids.

What's wrong with lots of kids? If a couple thinks they can handle it, more power to them! They are the ones that have to change all the diapers, take care of them for 18+ years, train them at their various stages of life, feed them three meals a day, and pay for their education. If you want two kids, that's ok. If I want twelve kids, that's ok too. It doesn't make me crazy. It just shows that I value having a lot of kids. "My hands are full of blessings."

What do you value? Books. Dogs. A nice house. A nice car. Vacations. Organic food. Golfing. Singing in a choir, Jewelry-making. Spelunking. Bacon?

What would you think if someone said, "Wow. You have a lot of books. You should really think about stopping." Or how about, "You look like you have your hands full with all those vacations." HA! You would laugh because you know that books and vacations are blessings. They are seen as things to be desired, and not something you can have "too much" of.

So why are children seen this way?

God says many times in the Bible that children are a blessing from Him. Why would we want to limit the outpouring of His love and grace?

God gives us children for many reasons. To teach us and shape us, and so we can help shape the next generation. It is a privilege and an honor to be part of that all-important job. Psalm 127 calls children "arrows in the hand of a warrior." May He fill our quiver with them.

Here's the point I want to make. It's a fact of life that we all fill our time with something. The list earlier in this post contains just some of the many things this world has to offer us. Most of them are great things, but realize that they all take up money and energy.

We all have our hands full of something, and we can choose what to fill them with. I am going to fill my hands with blessings from God and walk around proudly, showing off my "handfulls" that He has given me.

"Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD,
the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one's youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the gate."
(Psalm 127:3-5 ESV)
